Every time we watch the weather, there is a storm brewing this time of year. School is being cancelled due to heavy snow, ice, and lack of power. One school districts solution after a few years of attending school for days in the summer, developed what is called ‘Online Learning Days” when school is cancelled. Each teacher is required to upload their assignments into the district’s Learning Management System and the students have 5 days to complete the work. Many of the students may not have access to computers or power during these weather events. However, the 5 days to complete assignments seems to balance out the challenge of lack of power, access and equipment concerns.
It’s working well. It requires the student to be active in their learning. They must comprehend what is being asked of them and take ownership of the outcome. The teachers are available to ‘chat’ with them as needed and the learning is moving forward regardless of weather. It’s a balanced approach to learning and living in places where weather can be a challenge!
